Thoughts on the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards

Posted on

Awards shows are almost always hit-or-miss endeavors, and so was the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 18. Charlie Sheen seemed smug and strange, but riveting. Jane Lynch’s line about how Entourage causes lesbianism was an instant classic. I love watching Kate Winslet win because you can tell, no matter how many awards she has, she just loves to win! And there was something so joyous and gratifying about watching Melissa McCarthy accept an Emmy for Mike & Molly (and also, let’s face it, for Bridesmaids) that we all felt pretty good when it was over. A few people also felt tired and hungover, thanks to all the pre-Emmy parties over the weekend. At Saturday’s Evening Before event, a benefit for the Motion Picture & Television Fund, the (excellent) DJ was Tom Cruise’s son, Connor. On Friday night, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY and Women In Film threw a bash sponsored by L’Oréal Paris honoring the female nominees at Boa Steakhouse. There we fed and watered TV’s biggest stars, but based on the celebrities lining up to shake her hand, I think the most popular guest was Octavia Spencer from The Help. And the cast of Modern Family arrived, understandably, in a very good mood. Maybe they had a feeling they would win so many awards on Emmy night that Lynch would call it ”the Modern Family Awards.” Or maybe they were just excited to meet Octavia Spencer. Either way, congratulations!
