Jane Lynch as Emmys host: How did she do?

Blame Jimmy Fallon? Perhaps the Late Night host set the bar way too high with his top-notch opening number last year, but it seems a good number of you on Twitter were a tad disappointed in Jane Lynch’s hosting duties at the Emmys last night. (EW’s Ken Tucker would beg to differ, noting she was, “Excellent, and even better in her quick, throwaway moments than in the funny taped pieces.”)

While that bland opener (Alec Baldwin or no Alec Baldwin, it certainly got the show off on the wrong foot) certainly did her no favors, some — including yours truly — feel the ceremony didn’t allow Lynch to play to her strengths. Lynch is a great character actress… who didn’t get a chance to reference or play up any of her great characters last night. Granted, there was a small appearance by Sue Sylvester in the opening bit, but Lynch might have been better served to save her for a better parody later in the ceremony. And no bits in which Party Down‘s Constance Carmell brings cocktail weenies to the audience? Shame. It’s not that Lynch isn’t a likable personality, it’s that, unlike former great hosts like Ellen DeGeneres and Conan O’Brien, Lynch has won us over with her superb acting skills. Why not use them?

Of course, as James Hibberd pointed out, Lynch did have some great zingers, including the night’s best joke, “A lot of people are very curious why I’m a lesbian … Ladies and gentleman, the cast of Entourage.” (I personally thought her jab, “Oh, poor little Ricky Gervais, someone didn’t get enough hugs from Mommy and somehow it’s Hollywood’s fault” was one of the show’s low lights. Is it just me or is everything people have said about Ricky Gervais meaner than anything he actually said during the Golden Globes?)

But, let’s hear what you think PopWatchers. Was Jane Lynch a good host, a bad host, or just kind of an all-around okay/disappointing one? Do you think the Emmys underutilized her, or was she just not a good choice to host in the first place? Tale our poll below and sound of in the comments section!
