Bachelor host Chris Harrison has re-upped his contract to host the Miss America for at least two more years, reports the AP. The announcement comes on the 90th anniversary of the first Miss America pageant in 1921. Broadcasting from the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Miss America 2012 will air live on ABC next Jan. 14.
With a viewership of 14.6 million last Jan. 15, the Miss America organization is aggressively looking to keep its production relevant and hip. Harrison hopes part of this strategy will include highlighting the contestants’ down-to-earth personalities in addition to their bikini bodies. “They’re hysterical, they’re great, they’re very real, they’re very normal. They’re strong, yet they have insecurities like every other woman, and so I think showing that a little bit more might help,” Harrison said. “It might help the audience relate a little bit more.”
As for his hosting duties, Harrison plans to be but a backdrop for the women gunning for the tiara: “It’s not about [me]. It’s about these amazing women that have dedicated their lives to this one moment.”
