You remember the old tag line, courtesy of the classic 1979 sci-fi thriller Alien, “In space, no one can hear you scream”? While that may be true (I’ve never been to space, but I can say with the utmost certainty, I would freak out to deaf ears the entire time), people can most definitely hear you scream when you’re in a movie theater watching a freaky flick set in the infinite galaxy.

With Apollo 18 arriving this weekend, moviegoers will feel as trapped in their theaters as the unfortunate fellows aboard that secret space mission. Of course, it won’t be the first time movie fans will be thanking their lucky stars they are nowhere near the stars. From the aforementioned Alien — which truly set the bar for mixing outer space and the sheer terror of dealing with extraterrestrials on their turf — to the unsettling claustrophobia of films like Moon and 2001: A Space Odyssey, there are plenty of classic scared-in-space movies to make you thankful your feet are planted firmly on the Earth’s surface. But is it true-life circumstances like the botched Apollo 13 mission, or terrifying fictitious scenarios like Pitch Black that stuck with you the most?

PopWatchers, please note that scared in space movies do not necessarily mean space movies we’re scared of (i.e. The Adventures of Pluto Nash, Leprechaun 4: In Space). Then again, if space in general gives you the heebie-jeebies, we’re betting you’d add harmless flicks like WALL•E and Muppets From Space to the list — to be fair, Muppets have no business being in space!
