Lionsgate has acquired distribution rights to the Katherine Heigl, Robert De Niro family comedy The Big Wedding from Nu Image/Millennium Films. Avi Lerner, Founder and Co-Chairman of Nu Image, said of the repeat collaboration, “After our success together with action genre films like The Expendables and the upcoming Conan The Barbarian, this film presented a wonderful opportunity to expand our collaborative horizons into the realm of broad comedy.”

Heigl and De Niro are just two members of the star-studded Wedding party, including Susan Sarandon, Diane Keaton, Amanda Seyfried, Robin Williams, Ben Barnes, and Topher Grace. The Bucket List director Justin Zackham is helming the film, in which De Niro and Keaton play a long-divorced couple who must pretend they’re still married during their son’s wedding, which causes a chain reaction of misunderstandings for their friends and family. Joe Drake, President of Lionsgate, said in a release issued today that the film “is a charming, rollicking movie that promises to be an instant intergenerational family comedy classic.” Wedding, which was also produced by Two Ton Films and Anthony Katagas, is currently shooting in Greenwich, Conn., and will arrive in theaters Oct. 19, 2012.
