John Cusack, the Raven at Comic Con 2011

Posted on

Director John McTeigue and the stars of The Raven, John Cusack, Alice Eve, and Luke Evans, debuted the film’s first trailer for the fans of Hall H today. Cusack plays Edgar Allan Poe in a fictionalized account of the author’s last five days alive, in which he must help track down a serial killer inspired by Poe’s writings. “He was a bit of a rock star in his day,” Cusack said of the charismatic writer. “He definitely was the godfather of goth.”

The dark and moody trailer definitely brought the goth, including plenty of dead and mutilated bodies, and — of course — screeching ravens. “It’s an art movie and a popcorn movie all at once,” Cusack said during the panel (moderated by EW’s Anthony Breznican).

And for all you Poe fans, Cusack had no problem answering which works by the author are his top five: the short story “Hop-Frog,” the poem “The Raven,” “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” and “The Pit and the Pendulum.”

The Raven will be in theaters March 9.
