'True Blood' moves beyond the books (Spoiler alert!)

A shocking death leaves fans wondering where creator Alan Ball is going to take the show

R.I.P. Claudine. Many True Blood viewers were shocked when Sookie’s fairy godmother (played by Lara Pulver) was sucked dry by Eric (Alexander SkarsgĂ„rd) in the July 10 episode. Why? Her sudden death was a marked departure from Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels (which kept Claudine alive much longer). ”If we just did everything in the books, there would be no surprises,” says Blood executive producer Alan Ball. (This is not the first time Blood has rewritten Harris’ literary history. In season 1, Ball decided to spare fan favorite Lafayette.) But Harris insists she doesn’t worry about Ball playing fast and loose with her material. ”If he can be gracious to me, I can certainly be gracious enough to wait and see where he’s going.”
