We gave it a B

Like 2003’s Open Water, The Reef (2011, R, 1 hr., 28 mins.) concerns young wet-suit-wearing folks stranded in shark-infested waters with precious little hope of being rescued. Like Open Water, it features specially shot footage of real-life fish-beasties. Like Open Water… Okay, this straight-to-DVD horror film is an awful lot like Open Water. The only important difference is that The Reef was filmed in Australia (or just off it, anyway). However, the antipodean actors are both likable and believable, while writer-director Andrew Traucki oversees matters with the briskness of a hungry great white chasing after a class of fat kids. Throw another shark on the barbie? Why not? B
