Reviews of recent releases from Jackie Evancho, Michael Bolton, and more

Posted on

Jackie Evancho, Dream With Me
Barbra Streisand and Susan Boyle guest on the third(!) album from the 11-year-old America’s Got Talent runner-up, a strict adherent to the Charlotte Church doctrine of tween opera precocity. It’s not for pop lovers, but her cherubic ”Nessun Dorma” will be a strong contender for your neighborhood cat lady’s Song of Summer. CAdam Markovitz

Ledisi, Pieces of Me
Michelle Obama’s favorite coffeehouse R&B groover drops a healthy spoonful of sugar into her heady brew, though adding the odd espresso shot would have kept everything a little less drowsy. BKyle Anderson

Matt Nathanson, Modern Love
More of the inoffensive same from the friendly folk-popper, whose 2008 hit ”Come On Get Higher” found its way onto Idol and earned a cover version by Sugarland. The country duo show up here on ”Run,” a stately power ballad. B-Mikael Wood

Michael Bolton, Gems: The Duets Collection
Retreating a bit from last year’s Lady Gaga-assisted One World One Love, the soft-rock belter hooks up with Seal, Rascal Flatts, and others for covers of sure-thing hits like ”Fields of Gold” and ”You Are So Beautiful.” C+MW

Simple Plan, Get Your Heart On!
By augmenting their fidgety guitar assault with suburban reggae (”Summer Paradise”) and club-friendly drum machines (”Freaking Me Out”), the pop-punkers too often distract from adenoidal loud-and-proud angst-athons like ”You Suck at Love.” BKA
