Rob Lowe will star as accused wife-killer Drew Peterson in the tentatively titled Drew Peterson Story, Lifetime confirms. As initially reported by Deadline, The Big Bang Theory‘s Kaley Cuoco will costar as former Illinois police sergeant Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy, who disappeared in 2007 when she was 23 and Peterson was 53. While Peterson enjoyed the media attention while professing his innocence (her body has never been found), authorities did arrest him in 2009 — for allegedly murdering his third wife, Kathleen Savio, whose 2004 death had initially been ruled an accidental drowning.
Forget for a moment that Lowe is way more attractive than the Peterson, who is 10 years his senior, with gray hair and a mustache. (Please let Rob Lowe have gray hair and a mustache!) I think this will be an interesting role for him on his Parks and Recreation hiatus. Thanks to his innate likability and charm, we’ll buy that these young women fall for him. But because he has his own interesting past (albeit nothing like Peterson’s), we’re also open to the possibility that he’s capable of doing things that need to be hidden.
For those thinking it’s strange that Lowe would do a Lifetime movie now, remember he starred in the network’s 2009 adaptation of Ann Rule’s Too Late to Say Goodbye, which was inspired by the true story of an outwardly charming couple whose secret affairs result in the wife’s alleged suicide. “A movie like this, when I was growing up, would have been a movie. You’d have gone to the theater, you would have seen it,” Lowe said in 2009. “These movies aren’t made anymore, and in the last five years, they’re not made on television either — except in very specific places. One of ’em is Lifetime, and they do it really, really well. So I’m glad they’re makin’ stuff like this, on Lifetime.”
