Meredith Vieira, 57, announced during the May 9 broadcast of NBC’s Today show that she will be leaving the program in June and will be replaced by Ann Curry.

COURTS

On May 2, a California appeals court rejected an effort by record producer Phil Spector, 71, to overturn his 2009 conviction for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson. Spector is currently serving a sentence of 19 years to life.

DEATHS

Singer-songwriter John Walker, of ’60s and ’70s group the Walker Brothers, died May 7 of liver cancer at his L.A. home. The pop trio had hits with songs like ”Make It Easy on Yourself” and ”The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore.” Walker was 67…. Actress Dana Wynter, 79, best known for starring in the 1956 sci-fi film Invasion of the Body Snatchers, died May 5 of congestive heart failure at a hospital in Ojai, Calif…. TV and stage actress Sada Thompson, 83, who played the mother on the 1970s ABC drama Family, died of lung disease in Danbury, Conn., on May 4…. Marian Mercer, 75, a Tony award-winning actress and star of It’s a Living, died April 27, reportedly from complications of Alzheimer’s disease, in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
