Thor officially launched the summer movie season Thursday night by hammering out $3.3 million at midnight shows, according to Paramount. That’s a solid if not quite spectacular start for the Marvel superhero movie. Last week, Fast Five grossed a slightly higher $3.8 million from its midnight opening. Both movies pale in comparison to the last Twilight film, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, which summoned a record $30 million at midnight showings. However, Eclipse debuted at midnight in more than 4,000 theaters, while Thor and Fast Five only played at 1,800 and 1,104 theaters, respectively.
Thor expands into 3,955 theaters today, including 2,737 3-D theaters and 214 IMAX locations, and could finish the weekend with about $70 million.
