On Monday’s Oprah Winfrey Show, Shirley MacLaine, promoting her new book I’m Over All That and Other Confessions, entertained the audience with stories of her love life. “Well, I’ve had an awful lot of lovers,” she said, turning to the amused crowd, which applauded her candor. “They approve,” MacLaine said, before joking, “and a lot of awful lovers,” too. She would later make the point that she was always a serial monogamist who prepared genuine love affairs — and that when one gets older and interested in the spiritual dimension of things, sex takes on a different meaning and importance — but she had some fun getting there. “Yeah, I wasn’t into sexcapades, although I tried it once,” she said laughing. “I had three people in one day.” Watch the clip here. I love how you can see at least one woman in the audience going like, What did she just say? MacLaine gave the experience a thumb’s down. She needs an emotional connection for sex. Winfrey wanted more details, and MacLaine, who talks about the tryst in her book, obliged. “It was on a political campaign, where everybody was doing the same thing so, I just didn’t want to be left out,” she laughed.
“How did you arrange that, like one for breakfast, one for later in the day?” Oprah asked. “Something like that,” MacLaine said.
MacLaine was on Today this morning, and while Meredith Vieira did ask her to elaborate on why she says sex isn’t as important to her as it used to be, there was no talk of sexcapades. Watch that interview below. The most exciting part, I’d say, is when MacLaine explains why she calls fame the “drug of annihilation,” and Today cuts to footage of Snooki and Kim Kardashian.
