On April 15, 1865, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at Ford’s Theatre. 146 years later, the American Film Company is releasing The Conspirator, a movie that tells the tale of Mary Surratt, the only female member of the group charged with conspiring to kill the president — and the first woman ever hanged by the U.S. federal government. Robin Wright plays Surratt, who owned the boarding house where John Wilkes Booth (Toby Kebbell) and his cohorts plotted to take down Lincoln, Vice President Andrew Johnson, and Secretary of State William H. Seward. James MacAvoy also stars as a young lawyer and Civil War vet who agrees to defend Surratt when she is brought to trial.
