EW has confirmed that Ben Affleck is in talks to join the all-star cast of Baz Luhrmann’s 3-D movie adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary classic The Great Gatsby. The star and director of The Town would join Leonardo DiCaprio, who’ s set to play the dashing title character, Jay Gatsby, a wealthy mystery man who pines for his lost love amongst the swirling cocktail parties of Jazz Age Long Island. Also in the cast are Tobey Maguire as the story’s narrator Nick Carraway, and Carey Mulligan as the objection of Gatsby’s affection, Daisy Buchanan. Affleck is rumored to be up for the part of Daisy’s hard-headed, cheating husband, Tom Buchanan. According to reports, Affleck is trying to iron out his schedule so he can appear in the film and also direct the 1979 Iran hostage thriller, Argo (both projects are set up at Warner Bros., the studio that released The Town). If Affleck does sign on to the project, that still leaves one juicy part to be filled: that of Daisy’s easy-on-the-eyes gal pal Jordan Baker. Gatsby was previously made into a film in 1974 with Robert Redford as Gatsby, Sam Waterston as Nick, Mia Farrow as Daisy, and Bruce Dern as Tom, the Affleck role.
