Mary J. Blige cemented her title as the Queen of Hip Hop Soul by exposing her sorrows and heartaches on her classic 1994 album My Life.

Cuts like “Be Happy” and her cover of Rose Royce’s “I’m Goin’ Down” revealed a young woman unable to give or receive much-needed love. 17 years later, Blige–married and mature–seemingly is past the pain that once plagued her, which is why the title of her forthcoming album throws me for such a loop.

This morning Mary announced that her next offering, out Sept. 20, is called My Life II, The Journey Continues. The fact that she’s revisiting themes from the original certainly makes this an ambitious effort, to say the least—the album features production assistance from a who’s who of hip-hop and R&B’s elite, including Danja, Kanye West, Stargate, Swizz Beatz and The Underdogs.

My Life was an extremely personal set, recorded during a period when she was experiencing domestic abuse. Though she might not have those struggles to pull from this time around, Blige says inspiration’s not too far away.

“This album is a reflection of the times and lives of people all around me,” she explains in a press release. My Life II‘s Jerry Wonda-produced first single, “Someone To Love Me (Naked),” out yesterday,  finds a not-so-happy Mary J. wrestling with her temper. “I’ve got issues just like you,” she sings. Well, maybe that old Mary’s not as far gone as we thought. Check out her, Diddy and Lil Wayne in the video after the jump.

What do you think of the video? Excited about Mary’s upcoming sequel or do you think she should go in another direction? Let us know.
