We gave it a B

The sleepy bedroom community of Stellar Plains, N.J., finds that those bedrooms are suddenly battlefields when its women fall away from sex en masse, bewitched into chastity by the chilly wind of a strange enchantment. The spell’s unlikely source: a local high school production of Aristophanes’ Lysistrata, in which the ladies of ancient Greece use abstinence to force an end to the Peloponnesian War. As always, Wolitzer (The Wife, The Position) writes with wit and barbed insight, though it’s unclear why a master of modern fiction has turned to Alice Hoffman-esque tropes of magical realism in The Uncoupling; it feels like a literary crutch, one frankly beneath her talents.
