Many American TV series are adapted from shows across the globe: Ugly Betty was inspired by a Colombian telenovela, Big Brother was first broadcast in the Netherlands, and The Office, of course, comes from the UK. But what happens when American shows are the ones being re-invented abroad? Phil Rosenthal, the creator of Everybody Loves Raymond, found out, when Russian TV producers expressed interest in the Ray Romano family sitcom. In the fish-out-of-water documentary Exporting Raymond, Rosenthal learns the hard way that humor is usually the first thing lost in translation. The Yank navigates some serious culture shock with his new colleagues, bumbling to produce Voroniny, the Russian-language version of the American Emmy-winning sitcom. Check out the trailer below:
