Gwyneth Paltrow will sing “Coming Home” from Country Strong at the Oscars, the Motion Picture Academy announced today. Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi, accompanied by Alan Menken, will sing “I See the Light” from Tangled, Randy Newman will sing We Belong Together from Toy Story 3, and A.R. Rahman and Florence Welch will sing “If I Rise,” from 127 Hours.
Paltrow demonstrated her live-performance chops on the CMAs, but if I’m gonna watch the GOOP scion warble on television, I prefer Glee‘s Fake Substitute Teacher Singing Gwyneth to Country Strong‘s Fake Country Star Singing Gwyneth. Still, the Chuck fan in me is secretly really excited to see Zachary Levi perform, so it all comes out in the wash, or whatever metaphor means “I know I’ll watch the whole thing anyway.”
I think I speak for everyone when I say the best part of the Oscars is all the singing. Right, guys? Right? Look, there have been some terrific musical performances over the years — I’m partial to Robin Williams’ “Blame Canada,” because I’m a girl who likes a spectacle — but on the whole, I could comfortably reduce the number of musical performances to just the winner. Did you win? You get to sing! Did you not win? Well, remember that it was an honor just to be nominated.
What do you think, PopWatchers? Are you excited to see Paltrow et. al. perform come Feb. 27?
