'The Kennedys': History channel won't air miniseries

Network passes on Katie Holmes and Greg Kinnear project, reportedly under pressure from surviving members of Camelot

Reportedly caving to pressure from surviving members of Camelot last week, the History channel decided not to broadcast the eight-part miniseries The Kennedys featuring Katie Holmes as Jackie Kennedy and Greg Kinnear as JFK. The project was developed by 24 exec producer Joel Surnow. ”While the film is produced and acted with the highest quality,” said a network rep in a statement, ”after viewing the final product in its totality, we have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand.”

The move immediately drew comparisons to the situation eight years ago when CBS honcho Leslie Moonves declined to air The Reagans, relegating it to Showtime instead. Ironically, the rumor mill at press time had the pay cabler in the mix to possibly buy The Kennedys, even though a rep said they had yet to screen it. In the meantime, the mini-series will air in Canada on March 6, and has been sold internationally.
