Not letting a jail stint stop him from feeding his fans, Lil Wayne has packed his latest album with scraps and half-cooked songs that he whipped up before heading off to Rikers Island (he pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a weapon in 2009). I Am Not a Human Being‘s angry title track showcases Wayne’s ability to at once spit funny similes and tough talk, but its punk-hop guitar riffs barely even compete with the ones on his much-derided 2010 rock album, Rebirth. And it seems like he’s light on new ideas. On ”Popular,” he actually recycles his first four bars from Young Money’s naughty ”Bedrock,” with less-charming results.
There are two gems here: the smooth, Drake-assisted ”With You” and the languid players’ anthem ”I’m Single.” But true Wayne-heads will already be familiar with the latter, which was also on his stellar 2009 No Ceilings mixtape. Unfortunately, none of the new songs on this set hold a candle to that tape, much less his platinum-in-a-week 2008 smash, Tha Carter III. Wayne will no doubt start work on a new batch of rhymes for his immensely anticipated Tha Carter IV when he gets out. Let’s hope nothing this stale makes the cut. C
