Fall TV preview: Lone Star

New Drama, 9-10 PM, Fox

Bob Allen (James Wolk) is a Texas con man trying to go straight while loving two women at once. There’s his wife in Houston (Friday Night Lights‘ Adrianne Palicki), whose father (Jon Voight) employs Bob at his oil company; then there’s the girlfriend in Midland (Eloise Mumford), where Bob has been working his latest con. ”What we don’t want to do is have it become a weekly near-miss kind of thing,” says exec producer Kyle Killen, who insists that all the characters will have stories as interesting as Bob’s in a ”classic soap way.” (Killen pitched the show as ”Dallas without the cheese.”) For newcomer Wolk, the challenge is to keep Bob real. ”If he was the slickest guy in the world, it wouldn’t be fun to watch,” says the actor. ”Bob is charismatic and charming, but he doesn’t have all the answers.” SEPT. 20
