Image Credit: Carol Kaelson/Lifetime NetworksActress-comedian Sherri Shepherd, co-host of The View, is about to embark on a new and very different TV gig: as host of The Newlywed Game. According to the Associated Press, Shepherd will take over the reins of the long-running game show when it returns to the GSN in November. Presumably GSN felt that Shepherd, with her bubbly (or some might say bubble-headed) on-air personality, would be a zingier presence on the show than its previous host, Carnie Wilson, who left the job after just one year, and filed a suit against the network last month. Shepherd—who has earned mockery for some of her comments on The View, including her contention that she doesn’t believe in evolution and isn’t completely sure that the world is round—told the AP that she’ll share her own relationship wisdom with contestants: “I’m gonna tell the women you better make those men feel like they’re on top of the world…. Otherwise, you’re gonna be dealing with a pouting man.” Hmm, we’ll see how that advice goes over here in the 21st century. “I get to have fun,” Shepherd enthused about her new job. “I’m not going to be arguing with anybody about whether we should pull the troops out of Afghanistan.” Well, that’s a relief, at least.
If you ask me, the only true host of The Newlywed Show is Bob (“In the butt, Bob”) Eubanks, who held the job on and off for more than 30 years. I can’t say I find much appeal in the prospect of watching Sherri Shepherd try to one-up the contestants on who can say the most embarrassing things. But what about you? Will you tune in? You know the drill: Sound off in the comments.
