'Alice in Wonderland': Tim Burton's adaptation sparks remake fever

”The Little Mermaid,” ”Cinderella,” Sleeping Beauty” and more live- action projects in the works

Once upon a time — okay, just earlier this year — Tim Burton’s whacked-out Alice in Wonderland (starring Johnny Depp) grossed over $1 billion worldwide. Since then, studios have been snapping up storybook heroines for live-action revivals with a, shall we say, darker twist. Here’s a look at what’s in the works for some of your favorite classic characters.

The Little Mermaid
No singing seafood here: Joe Wright (The Soloist) is developing a live-action movie that sticks closer to Hans Christian Andersen’s bleak story about a mermaid who sacrifices her life for the prince she loves.

Cinderella
Producer Simon Kinberg (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) and writer Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) are planning to add swashbuckling adventure and girl power to the timeless tale.

Sleeping Beauty
Hide your spinning wheels! Tim Burton is in talks to direct a twisted version of this fairy tale from the point of view of the evil sorceress Maleficent — to be played by none other than Angelina Jolie.

Snow White
Producer Brett Ratner (director of Rush Hour 3) has promised to honor the original Brothers Grimm story by including thieving dwarves and a fearsome dragon in his film, which will be shot in 3-D.

Red Riding Hood
Twilight helmer Catherine Hardwicke has asked Amanda Seyfried (Dear John) to don the crimson cape for a gothic take on the fairy tale, pitting Red against a werewolf in a medieval town.
