STARRING Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel
DIRECTED BY Jon Turteltaub
WRITTEN BY Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard

Growing up in Montreal, Jay Baruchel loved the ”Sorcerer’s Apprentice” sequence in Fantasia (1940) — the one where Mickey Mouse gets in a mess by trying to imitate his master’s magical abilities. Actually, the Tropic Thunder star more than loved it: He decked out his room in gear from the minimovie, and even drifted off to sleep under bedsheets decorated with pictures of Mickey in the sorcerer outfit. Now the 28-year-old actor is starring in a new blockbuster-size version of the tale, as an NYU physics student apprenticed to a modern-day sorcerer (Nicolas Cage). ”It’s more than a little weird, man,” laughs Baruchel. ”I’m the Mickey in this one. It’s big gloves to fill.”

Riffing on the classic short, the new Sorcerer’s Apprentice is a CGI-packed action-adventure set in a world where good and evil wizards have been waging a secret battle since the time of King Arthur. The movie’s blend of science and the supernatural is familiar turf for National Treasure alums Cage, director Jon Turteltaub, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. But unlike Cage’s straitlaced, khaki-wearing character in the Treasure films, Turteltaub says, ”this guy has been alive for 1,500 years and can make fire shoot out of his hands. The part plays to Nic’s unpredictability, boldness, confidence, weirdness. It all just fits.”
