STARRING Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson
WRITTEN BY Rodrigo García
DIRECTED BY Rodrigo Garcí

Though the title suggests otherwise, there are at least three mothers and even more children in the latest drama from indie writer-director Rodrigo García (Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her). Karen (Annette Bening) is a prickly physical therapist who longs for the daughter she gave up for adoption when she was just 14; Elizabeth (Naomi Watts) is an icy lawyer who seduces men and winds up with an unplanned pregnancy; and Lucy (Kerry Washington) is a married baker desperate to adopt a baby. The R-rated movie’s exploration of the very nature of motherhood appealed to Watts, who had given birth to her second son with actor Liev Schreiber just six weeks before shooting started. That certainly made her sex scene with Samuel L. Jackson (who plays against type as her soft-spoken, bow-tied boss) more challenging than most. ”It was the second scene we shot, and it’s one of the raciest I’ve ever done,” laughs Watts. ”It wasn’t the sexiest moment to be playing that: I was lactating and felt like my bosoms were the size of watermelons. But it was liberating.”
