Netflix-Relativity Media cut deal to stream new releases

Posted on

Netflix and indie film producer Relativity Media today announced a deal that will see Relativity movies stream directly and exclusively to Netflix during the traditional “pay TV window.” The first movies announced as covered in the deal are The Fighter, starring Christian Bale, Mark Wahlberg, and Amy Adams, distributed by Paramount Pictures; Skyline, co-directed by the Brothers Strause, released by Rogue Pictures and Universal Studios; Rogue Pictures’ Nicolas Cage action/thriller Season of the Witch; and Movie 43, written and directed by Peter Farley. All will release later this year and stream through Netflix shortly thereafter.

“Historically, the rights to distribute these films are pre-sold to pay TV for as long as nine years after their theatrical release,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix. “Through our partnership with Relativity, these films will start to become available to our members just months after their DVD release.”
