Covert Affairs USA, July 13, 10 p.m.
Still missing Jennifer Garner’s sexy-fun spy series Alias? Then Piper Perabo has just the mission impossible for you. On Covert Affairs, the 33-year-old Coyote Ugly star plays a rookie CIA agent assigned to a division that tackles domestic-security cases. ”She’s independent, she’s a hero, and she gets to do a lot of fun stuff. And yet there are real emotional conflicts with her family,” says Perabo. ”She’s not just a superhero.” — Jeff Jensen
EW: This is your first TV series. Did the example of other movie actresses doing TV inspire you?
Piper Perabo Definitely. I loved Damages. That show is so genius, and the two female leads are great. All of a sudden there’s this rush of shows led by women that are interesting, powerful dramas. It felt to me like the road was already being paved.
The pilot of Covert Affairs reminded me a lot of Alias, but without the more far-out fantasy stuff.
Perabo The writers keep saying, ”It’s a human view of the CIA.” I was a big fan of Alias and Jennifer Garner. But I also think it’s interesting to see that from a different perspective. I can relate to a young woman who has a career that is demanding, while trying to balance that with your personal life.
In one of the early scenes in the pilot, your character goes skydiving, and I swear it looks like you really did that stunt yourself. Did you?
Perabo No! I would jump out of a plane in three seconds — which is exactly why they wouldn’t let me. They sent a ponytail and my jumpsuit to Florida so a woman who looks just like me could jump out of a plane.
So what’s the craziest spy thing you have done so far?
Perabo I wore Louboutin shoes in the pilot, and the network went crazy for them. So now it seems like any chance they can put me in a pair, they do. There’s an episode where I had to kick through the windshield with my Louboutins and run down the street and jump into an elevator shaft and rappel down it in my stilettos. I was like, ”Are you serious?”
