'Heaven': Hot summer TV

Syfy’s new mystery-drama has our attention

Posted on

Syfy, July 9, 10 p.m.

What it’s about: Think Twin Peaks meets The X-Files. Inspired by the novella The Colorado Kid by EW columnist Stephen King and created by the same producers who turned King’s The Dead Zone into a successful long-running drama, Haven brings FBI agent Audrey Parker (Emily Rose of ER and Brothers & Sisters) to a small Maine town to investigate the murder of an ex-con. She ends up staying as she begins to realize that Haven is a secret sanctuary for people afflicted with strange supernatural maladies.

What to expect: Yes, there’s mythology — but no, this isn’t Lost. ”The mythology is clear and will be teased out in bits, but every episode is a stand-alone story and you can jump in and enjoy it at any time,” says exec producer Sam Ernst. Early episodes include ”weird weather stuff and weird food stuff,” says Rose. ”And just when you think the scripts can’t get weirder, you turn the page and there’s an exploding cow.”
