Soccer and Shakira have lots in common. Well, one thing, at least: Once far more popular outside the U.S. than in, the singer and the sport have both gone on to raise their respective profiles in our fair nation. (Just go with it.) So it makes perfect sense, sort of, that Shakira was selected to sing the official anthem of the 2010 World Cup.
According to Billboard, Shakira’s “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” is a collaboration with South African group Freshlyground. The hooks here are nowhere near as indelible or inventive as those on last year’s awesome She Wolf, but they’ll do.
Check out a helpfully subtitled video for “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” after the jump and let us know what you think. Clip is via Vulture, which makes an inevitable joke about “O Let’s Do It” rapper Waka Flocka Flame. I’ll be honest, when I saw the title of this song I, too, hoped Waka Flocka might drop a verse on “Waka Waka.” Maybe on the remix?
