Acclaimed jazz guitarist Herb Ellis dies

Posted on

Herb Ellis, a jazz guitarist a member of Jimmy Dorsey’s big-band orchestra as a young man and later renowned for his work with Ella Fitzgerald  and onetime membership in the Oscar Peterson Trio, has passed away at the age of 88 in Los Angeles, from complications associated with Alzheimer’s.

Billie Holiday recorded perhaps the most famous version of the standard “Detour Ahead,” which he originally composed with his two partners in the trio Soft Winds.
