During its horror-fueled heyday in the ’50s and ’60s, Britain’s Hammer Films cranked out dozens of deliciously and deliriously creepy gothic chillers like Dracula Has Risen From the Grave and The Curse of Frankenstein. But the studio’s always had more to offer than just fog-shrouded full moons and bosomy countesses in gauzy negligees. Take the six lesser-known titles in this no-frills, three-disc set. There isn’t a single vampire in the lot. Instead, you’ll get a tense thriller about an unstable race-car driver with a compulsion to strangle his adoring wife (Stop Me Before I Kill!), a fun bank-robbery caper with an O. Henry sting in its tail (Cash on Demand), and a truly demented story about a husband who thinks that he’s pulled off the perfect murder (The Snorkel). Most of the films pack some sort of ironic, Twilight Zone punch before the end credits roll. The best — and strangest — of the bunch is Joseph Losey’s 1963 oddity These Are the Damned, which somehow mixes a gang of biker hooligans with a paranoid, end-of-the-world sci-fi plot…? and actually pulls it off! There’s not much in the way of EXTRAS, just the original trailers. B
