After the news came down that Megan Mullally had exited the cast of Broadway’s now-postponed Lips Together, Teeth Apart, what did I do to mourn? I went to get a little Megan fix via my favoritest of her non-Will & Grace performances. You know what I’m talking about: Her legendary “Turn the Tub Around” music video/commercial for I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter that came out at the end of last year. “Tal-kin’ ’bout nu-tri-tion!” I was instantly happy again. I have what’s probably not a startling confession: I turn the tub around nearly every day, whenever I need a little pick-me-up in a down moment. The whole music video/commercial is like a gay fever dream. Join me after the jump, where I’ll get to how this relates to Betty White’s (stunt double’s) legendary tumbling pass during a Golden Girls dance-off. *
Mullally discovers the amazing benefits of I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter while in the grocery store and is encouraged to literally “turn the tub around” (sung in the style of “Turn the Beat Around,” natch) by a cute little clerk who dances around her and takes her to the freezer section where more Broadway-ish dancers lavish her. “This is so profound!” Mullally sings! A disco ensues! And she does flips! All that flipping, obviously, reminded me of another of my favorite, go-to YouTube clips: the episode of Golden Girls where the ladies have a dance-off and silly, sweet Rose Nylund (my sweetie Betty White!) literally flips out across the dance floor. This also sometimes goes on repeat when I’m sad.
“Turn the Tub Around” (Megan Mullally’s flipping-out starts at about 2:10):
(Special props go to my Aunt Jonetta, who turned me on to the Tub. At Christmas this year, Jonetta showed us the channel on her Kansas cable service that played “Turn the Tub Around” non-stop, 24 hours a day. I mean!!!)
Golden Girls clip (Betty White’s flipping-out starts at about 1:35):
Don’t you feel happier now? And if you don’t, tell me what your favorite pick-me-up video is. Note: Your video picks do not have to include gay icons — or, rather, their blatant stunt doubles — doing flips. (But it’s more fun if they do!)
