Imagine thinking that you will never hear your husband’s voice ever again. Devastating. Since losing his voice nearly four years ago due to complications from thyroid cancer, film critic Roger Ebert has been unable to utter a word. Just like that, one of the most famous voices in America — in the world, really — was tragically silenced. But on an emotional episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show airing later today, Ebert and his wife, Chaz, finally have the chance to speak to each other again. Thanks to a Scottish technology company, which culled decades of audio clips of Ebert’s voice from At the Movies and cobbled together a text-to-speech software program, Ebert can now speak again in something close to his own voice. Watch the clip below as Ebert and Chaz sit down, hold hands, and tear up as they “talk” for the first time in three and a half years. It’s nothing short of a miracle.
