'Lost''s two worlds

Posted on

The castaways are living double lives — one on the Island, and one off. Here’s where things stand in both.

Hugo ”Hurley” Reyes (Jorge Garcia)
Island world
Hurley steps up as castaway honcho after Jack is rattled by his busted change-the-future/past plan. Heeding dead Jacob’s spectral instruction, Hurley brings his friends to the Temple and gives Dogen (Hiroyuki Sanada) Jacob’s guitar case, which contains an ankh, inside of which is a list of names, most likely castaways. Seriously, what does Jacob have against direct communication?

Sideways World
Instead of being cursed by his lottery-winning digits, Hurley considers himself lucky. And evoking almost Jacob-esque benevolence, he hooks up just-fired Locke with his temp agency, run by terminally ill Rose (L. Scott Caldwell).

Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox)
Island world
The castaway leader, new and improved with Zen attitude, is looking after his peeps in the Temple — and has been told that his half sister, Claire, and Sayid have been ”infected,” presumably with Smokey darkness. He’ll soon be getting Jacob’s side of the story in the dead deity’s conflict with Smokey.

Sideways world
The spinal surgeon is returning from Australia with the body of his dead father, but the airline has misplaced the corpse. Might he be aware of his Island other-life? Discuss.

Claire Littleton (Emilie de Ravin)
Island world
Upcoming episodes will disclose if gun-toting Claire spent her three years MIA in the jungle alone or with creepy company like her ghostly father, Christian (John Terry). Is the allegedly infected Aussie suffering from the ”sickness” that doomed Rousseau’s fellow French scientists?

Sideways world
She is stood up at LAX by the couple who wanted to adopt her unborn baby. She is treated by Doc Ethan (William Mapother) at the hospital — a kindly variation of the creepy Other who abducted her in season 1. And she may now keep the child, whom she spontaneously named Aaron, because ”it’s like, I don’t know, I knew it or something.” Interesting…

Kate Austen (Evangeline Lilly)
Island world
She fails in her attempt to pull a heartbroken Sawyer out of his pity party, and is now redoubling her efforts to bring Claire back to her baby, Aaron.

Sideways world
As a fugitive, she’s wanted for murder, but we don’t know yet if this Kate is accused of killing her father or someone else. She first carjacks Claire, then assists the Aussie mommy. Now she’s back on the lam with Claire’s credit card. Lilly suspects that Sideways Kate has her Island self buried in ”her soul memory.” She’s also playing her a bit differently: ”This new Kate, I have decided, is actually having fun being on the run. It’s her adrenaline rush, her drug. And without it, she wouldn’t know what to do with herself.”

John Locke (Terry O’Quinn)
Island world
He’s dead. At his (darkly comic) Island funeral, longtime enemy Ben eulogizes him as ”a believer…a man of faith.” The fearsome Island entity known as Smokey has assumed Locke’s look — and he might be stuck with it, whether he wants to be or not. Un-Locke, who claims to have once been human, is haunted by a sandy-haired child in Others attire with bloody palms. Yep, that’s gonna get explained.

Sideways world
He’s alive, seemingly at peace with his handicap and happily engaged to his soul mate Helen (Katey Sagal); their October wedding is looming. Now substitute-teaching at a high school where his colleagues include…Ben Linus.

Jin-Soo Kwon (Daniel Dae Kim)
Island world
Searching for wife Sun. Still. He accompanies Kate on her Sawyer quest but splits from her to seek out the site where Sun’s plane (Ajira 316) crashed. However, Jin is winding back to the Temple when he is nearly killed by two angry Others. He is saved by jungle cat Claire…or has he been captured by her?

Sideways world
He appears to be delivering a watch to an associate of Sun’s mobster father. But what’s the story with all the cash in his luggage? ”Good question,” says Daniel Dae Kim, hinting that the mystery could be a slow burn. ”He seemed surprised by the money. I think he might have known it was there. But the amount? Maybe not.”

Sun-Hwa Kwon (Yunjin Kim)
Island world
Searching for husband Jin. Still. Her current companions are pilot Frank Lapidus (Jeff Fahey), Jacob bodyguard Ilana (Zuleikha Robinson), and Ben. They’re now trekking to the Temple in hopes of finding Jin and the other castaways. What they actually discover will leave them shocked.

Sideways world
Back to being stuck in a rigidly traditional Korean marriage to Jin, who prudishly told her to button up her sweater on the plane. ”I thought maybe Flash Sideways Jin [would be] nicer to Sun,” laughs Yunjin Kim. ”No, he is still an a — hole.” Does this Sun also know English? TBD. Plus, a customs agent called her by her maiden name, Paik, so is she even married to Jin? Also TBD.

Sayid Jarrah (Naveen Andrews)
Island world
He is mortally wounded in 1977 and takes the injury with him when he’s wormholed to 2007. After dying in the Temple’s (malfunctioning) resurrection Jacuzzi, the former Iraqi soldier is born again, but diagnosed as ”infected” and ”claimed,” perhaps by Smokey. He’ll soon have to prove his character — and he’ll learn some secrets about Dogen.

Sideways world
He helps Jack save Charlie (Dominic Monaghan) from a heroin OD on the plane, and seems to be in L.A. to search for lady love Nadia. But — OMG alert! — what’s up with Sayid using an Iranian passport? Producers decline to comment, but fans should note it is the same one he used in season 1.

Sawyer (Josh Holloway)
Island world
The seemingly redeemed con man has gone dark again — and has joined Team Smokey following the death of Juliet, whom he intended to marry. He’s perplexed by Juliet’s last words, relayed via psychic Miles (Ken Leung): ”It worked.” Was she trying to tip Sawyer off to the existence of the parallel world? Oh, and he really hates Jack. Like, really, really hates him.

Sideways world
He overheard Hurley speaking about winning the lottery; might he be planning a scam? Sawyer assists Kate in her escape and gives her sexy shiny eyes. This new Sawyer is noticeably more at ease than the criminal who crashed on the Island; is he even a criminal at all?

Ben Linus (Michael Emerson)
Island world
Lost’s longtime chief villain now finds himself humbled after the Locke-ness Monster manipulates him into killing Jacob. He’s now not quite sure what his next move should be. Or is he?

Sideways world
The LOL shocker of the last episode reveals that Ben teaches European history at the L.A. high school where Locke now works as a substitute. Will the two Island enemies clash? Maybe they fight over who gets to run the glee club! Regardless, an upcoming Ben episode will tell his tale. ”All of the surprises have a whiff of doubt about them,” says Emerson. ”Can we really trust what we’ve just seen? It just goes on. It’s the same old Lost.”
