Guilty Pleasures, Round Three: George Michael/Wham (6) vs. ABBA (2)

Posted on

EW’s Music Mix is searching for the Greatest Guilty Pleasure Musical Act of All Time. With eight seeded contestants remaining (see all the matchups), this tournament is continuing to change hearts, minds, and lives, as well as make some people remarkably agitated! Read/listen to the following, and then cast your vote in the poll after the jump; reader comments will be used from here on out, so we encourage you to also post a comment explaining why you chose the way you did. Note: In case of a tie, please select the artist you feel more ashamed to adore.

GEORGE MICHAEL/WHAM!

It wasn’t an easy win, but George upset the Spice Girls to move on. Gotta have faith!

“Tough choice, but longevity and the sheer volume of guilty pleasures give it to George Michael. Besides ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’ is the cheesiest song of all time.” — Lisa Simpson

“Wham for the win! “Freedom” popped up on the iPod the other day (I’m not really one for creating playlists, so I’m at the mercy of the shuffle). Some dormant part of my brain kicked into gear, and there I was, singing every word of that song from beginning to end, with the biggest grin on my face. I’m pretty sure the tinted windows of my Jeep are enough to make me invisible to others on the road. (And by “I’m pretty sure” I mean “I really, really hope.”)” — v

“Even leaving out George Michael’s whole solo oeuvre, Wham! still takes it over the Spice Girls. I mean, I love the Girls and I voted for them in the first round, but check the body of work. Wham Rap!, Young Guns, Bad Boys, Club Tropicana, Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, Freedom, Everything She Wants, Last Christmas, I’m Your Man. For heaven’s sake, the band has an exclamation point in its name. Give them the win. On a whole other note, should I be worried that one of my quotes has made it into about three match ups now?” — kat hayes

ABBA

The Swedes made it look like Styx was some sketchy bar band in Round Two, even though everyone keeps refusing to admit they’re a guilty pleasure and trying to equate them with the Beatles.

“ABBA are going to shake Styx off like dandruff. How fitting that the song choice for this round is Waterloo. Napoleon on Elba had a better shot at victory than Styx have at defeating this Swedish powerhouse.” — kat hayes

“Abba all the way. If they did reform (no chance of course) but if they did, half the world would turn out to see them.” — Mitch H
