With her new movie, Bandslam, Aly Michalka may just become a household name — though it’s a slightly difficult one to pronounce. ”When I was younger, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, you guys, really? You’re butchering it!”’ says Michalka (pronounced mee-SHAH-kah). ”Now I’ve just kind of gotten used to it.”
After a few stints on the Disney Channel (including as a series regular on Phil of the Future) and eight years performing professionally with her younger sister AJ in the American Music Award-nominated act Aly & AJ (recently renamed 78violet), the 20-year-old Michalka now plays a free-spirited high school rocker in Bandslam, which the actress dubs ”The Breakfast Club meets School of Rock.” She cranks out a few tunes in the flick, including a cover of Cheap Trick’s ”I Want You to Want Me.”
What’s next on her set list? 78violet are set to release a self-titled album this year. In addition to the band, she has two more movies due in 2010. She reteams with Bandslam costar Lisa Kudrow for the comedy Easy A, and plays opposite Leighton Meester in the thriller The Roommate. Rock on.
