Conan Takes the Tonight Show Reins From Jay
Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and the Masturbating Bear were nowhere to be seen, but that didn’t stop Conan O’Brien from beginning his tenure on NBC’s late-night talk-show institution, The Tonight Show, in absurdist style on June 1: The host ”ran” from New York to Los Angeles, only to realize that he’d left the keys to his new Universal City studio back in the Big Apple. With former Late Night sidekick Andy Richter serving as announcer, and Will Ferrell and Pearl Jam appearing as guests, O’Brien became the show’s fifth host in 55 years. ”I think I timed this moment perfectly,” he told the audience. ”I’m on a last-place network, I moved to a state that’s bankrupt, and tonight’s show is sponsored by General Motors.” (O’Brien notched a 7.1 in preliminary overnight ratings, the highest for a Tonight Monday telecast in more than four years.) Three days earlier, Jay Leno vacated his post graciously — with O’Brien as his last guest — and sentimentally showcased all 68 children born to Tonight Show staffers during his 17 years behind the desk. (The late-night king ended his reign with a hefty 8.8 overnight rating.) Leno’s goodbye was understandably understated, given that he’ll be Jaywalking to prime time in just three months: The Jay Leno Show debuts Sept. 14 at 10 p.m. — Dan Snierson

I want little bigheaded babies,” Hudson said. ”That’s a goal — get married, have a family.” — Simon Vozick-Levinson, with additional reporting by Sean Smith
