We’ve got a fair idea what fans of the Dave Matthews Band are going to be listening to next week. That would be the new DMB album Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, which is released on Tuesday. But what is on Mr Matthews iPod? We have him a call to find out.
“A friend of mine, Danny Barnes, is recording an album and I’m obsessed with him. He’s a banjo player and he has a great record called Dirt on an Angel that’s already available. But this new one is absolutely amazing. Also, I’ve been listening to a lot of Pete Seeger because his birthday came up and at the beginning I was just looking for a song to sing at his birthday party [the legendary protest singer’s 90th “birthday party” was actually a star-studded Madison Square Garden concert which took place earlier this month.] And he’s recorded once or twice! There’s just endless recordings of him. So I’ve been enjoying going through some of his history. A lot of banjo in my life lately! If someone told me 20 years ago that I was going to be listening to a lot of banjo when I was 42 I would not have been able to get my head around it. The other thing I’ve been listening to a lot is that Bela Fleck and Chick Corea album [2007’s The Enchantment], which is also amazing. But it’s also banjo! What’s going on? Maybe this happens to everyone when they get older and no one talks about it.”
