The Must List: Week of May 3, 2009

‘JCVD,’ ‘Scrubs’ season finale, ‘Snakes on a Plane’ TV edit, and 12 others make up the countdown of pop culture gems YOU and the EW staff are loving this week

Posted on

JCVD, Jean-Claude Van Damme

DVD
JCVD on DVD
Former action star Jean-Claude Van Damme returns in a film that’s as cerebral as it is chopsocky. He plays a version of himself and gets caught up in a heist. The genius of the conceit is that by being in on the joke, the Muscles From Brussels saves himself from becoming one — again.

TV
DANCING WITH THE STARS on ABC
Not so fast, Gilles. The hunky Sex and the City hoofer may look like a lock, but with Shawn and Melissa in the mix, it’s still anybody’s dance floor. Watch all three try to cha-cha their way to the finals.

MUSIC
”KINDA LIKE A BIG DEAL,” the Clipse
The Clipse are ready to party, if this clever jam is any hint. And they know who to invite: Guest Kanye kicks sick lyrics that earn his swagger.

TV
THE AMAZING RACE finale on CBS
Go, Luke and ma Margie, you’re inspiring! Go, Jen and Kisha, we like you! Go, Ugly American Jaime! (No, seriously — go. As in away.)

TV
SCRUBS season finale on ABC
Will the cult sitcom be signing off for good on May 6? We still don’t know, but either way, here’s hoping the season ends like this: J.D. (Zach Braff) and Elliot (Sarah Chalke) put a ring on it, Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) and his shrew decide to tame each other, and we finally get a Mr. Big-esque reveal of the janitor’s name.

DVD
MICHELLE WILLIAMS in Wendy and Lucy on DVD
Williams — stripped of anything resembling glamour — is deeply affecting as a wanderer whose only friend is her dog, Lucy.

TV
SOUTHLAND on NBC
Who knew our favorite teen stars could be such tough cops? Regina King (227) and Ben McKenzie (The O.C.) police an L.A. that’s simultaneously sun-bleached and dark, in what amounts to a mini-movie every week. We’re hooked.

BOOKS
THE FAMILY MAN, by Elinor Lipman

So, divorced, gay Henry reunites with his stepkid, who’s now an actress hired to pretend to date a C-list celeb, and she moves into Henry’s house. How can that not be funny?

TV
SNAKES ON A PLANE television edit
Samuel L. Jackson has had it with these ”monkey-fighting snakes on this Monday-to-Friday plane!” Tune in to FX for the giggle-worthy F-bomb tweaks or watch here.

THE WRESTLER on DVD
Are we watching Mickey Rourke or the Ram? Is it an actor’s comeback attempt, or an athlete’s? Watch the Oscar-nominated drama again— along with the added making-of and Bruce Springsteen’s title-song video — to see that, wonderfully, it’s a little bit of both. —Submitted by V.

Can we please get some Must List love for The Mentalist?—Julie Ed. note: Yes
