This latest guy-won’t-grow-up comedy follows a terminal bachelor (McConaughey) who realizes he let his soul mate (Garner) slip away only after he’s visited by phantom paramours — A Christmas Carol-style — from his past, present, and future. Over the years, Ben Affleck and Vince Vaughn flirted with the role before McConaughey signed on. ”I can safely say that the women in my real-life past are not as pissed at me as the women are at my character,” says McConaughey, ”but there may be a few [ex-girlfriends] who want to cut off the two things hangin’ down low.” McConaughey himself recently retired his ingle-guy jersey when he settled down with partner Camila Alves and became a dad, to son Levi, in 2008. ”The fact that [McConaughey]] was going through the same sea change as the character added real weight to his performance,” says Waters (Mean Girls), who cast Garner as the actor’s fiercely feminine foil. The strategy worked. ”We do some heavyweight sparring,” says McConaughey. ”It was fun and racy and sexy and strong.”
