We gave it a B

The liberal-arts grads coming of age in Joanna Smith Rakoff’s pre- and ?post-9/11 New York City ?are indeed a fortunate bunch — ambitious, ?attractive, expensively educated. Alas, much like the characters in Jay McInerney novels of an earlier era, they often seem to be ciphers, defined largely by their supreme self-absorption (ah, youth!). Still, the soap-opera story lines in A Fortunate Age (struggling actress Emily envies friend ?Tal’s burgeoning movie career; would-be academic Lil’s marriage to a handsome, arrogant writer unravels) are compellingly drawn — even as certain characters’ threads flit in and out, eventually dissipating like so many wisps of smoke.
