In The Motherhood is one of those shows you sit there watching and think, ”Boy, I’ll bet the story ? behind this thing is more interesting than the show itself.” Flat and obvious, Motherhood stars a trio of superior funnywomen — Will & Grace‘s Megan Mullally, Curb Your Enthusiasm‘s ?Cheryl Hines, and Jessica St. Clair of Best Week Ever and Worst Week — as moms who pal around and joke about the stresses in their lives. If I tell you that Hines’ character communicates her lack of sexual activity by making a ?circular motion around her pelvis area and saying ”No one has seen this ?in a very long time,” you get the level of the entire show.
Motherhood is based on a series of webisodes with a completely different cast, including Chelsea Handler and Leah Remini, which was coarser, ?funnier, and more true to life. (Plots were based on real stories submitted by viewers.) So why would Mullally and Hines, who know how to make coarse-and-funny work for them, agree to this half hour of watered-down wine-drinking and sniping? ?And you know who I feel more ?sorry for? Christina Applegate and ?Melissa McCarthy in Samantha Who?, Motherhood‘s lead-out show. ?That duo is doing excellent work in ?a not great but sure as hell better ?series. Plus, hasn’t Samantha earned the right to be the leadoff show in this hour? Sheesh… C?
