One-Year Anniversary: Jennifer Aniston & John Mayer
”Who ever said that every relationship has to last forever?” said Jennifer Aniston, 40, this week to the U.K.’s Mail on Sunday’s You magazine. ”That’s hoping for too much. I think every relationship is a world unto itself.” If that’s the case, Aniston’s world has gotten more secure since she and boyfriend John Mayer, 31, celebrated at the Oscars last month, where they marked the one-year anniversary of the night they first met.
The ensuing 12 months, however, weren’t as fairy-tale lovely as those bookends make it sound. After dating for less than six months, Aniston and the singer-guitarist broke up last August, which Mayer infamously announced during an impromptu press conference on the street in New York. ”I don’t want to waste somebody’s time if something’s not right,” he said. Still, they reunited in the fall, with their Oscar coming-out further confirming their change of heart. Said a friend of Mayer’s to PEOPLE magazine this week: ”They’ve come a long way as far as understanding each other.” On his Twitter page, Mayer even copped to voting on PEOPLE’s online ”Is He a Keeper?” poll about him. ”I clicked ‘Love Him,”’ he said. (He was in the minority. Sixty-two percent voted for the actress to ”Lose Him.”) As for Aniston, she told EW earlier this winter, ”When I was a kid, I used to put Shaun Cassidy on my wall. I was going to marry him. Didn’t happen.” Perhaps things will turn out differently this time around? — Additional reporting by Josh Rottenberg
