The Must List: Week of Feb. 22, 2009

TV
1. TOP CHEF finale
Some spiced it up, others stayed in their comfort (food) zone, but Hosea, Fabio, Stefan, and Carla all landed in the final four. If things go as expected, this one’s Stefan’s to lose, but when does Bravo’s Chef ever go as expected?

BOOKS
2. ”I CAN READ MOVIES” Series
Judge a film by its cover with this clever online collection of fake old-fashioned book jackets for flicks like Mean Girls and The Temple of Doom.

MOVIES
3. GOMORRAH
Matteo Garrone’s Mob saga was a Cannes darling for masterfully weaving five tales about crime life in the Campania region of Italy.

MUSIC
4. ”TAKE ON ME,” A.C. Newman
Newman’s cover of a-ha’s classic is folkie and ethereal, heavy on the acoustic guitar, and light on anything resembling ’80s synth-pop.

MOVIES
5. INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS teaser
”Each and every man under my command owes me 100 Nazi scalps — and I want my scalps,” storms Brad Pitt in the promo for Quentin Tarantino’s WWII movie (due in August). Between that and the film’s stunning violence, consider our interest piqued. (Although we’re still wrapping our heads around The Office‘s B.J. Novak appearing in that line of soldiers.)

MOVIES
6. OSCAR SHORTS on iTunes
You’ve seen the feature-length films, now download the live-action and animated Academy Award-nominated shorts. A special Must List shout-out to Presto, Doug Sweetland’s cartoon comedy about an adorably single-minded magician’s bunny who repeatedly sticks it to his boss until he gets his carrot.

TV
7. ‘THE SOPRANOS’ swearing video
Holy $#!%, it takes 27 minutes to say every dirty word from The Sopranos! Or wait, should that be, holy $#!%, it only takes 27 minutes? Either way, the very NSFW clip is here.

MUSIC
8. BUDDY HOLLY MEMORIAL COLLECTION
Commemorate the 50th anniversary of the day the music died with this three-disc set featuring the best of Holly and the Crickets, including ”Everyday” and, of course, ”Peggy Sue.”

TV
9. 90210 on The CW
Her pregnancy plot makes Adrianna (Jessica Lowndes, left) relatably human — a welcome sign that 90210 is about more than just pretty, stuck-up teens and their credit cards. Although we kinda love them, too.

10. FRINGE on Fox
It so got good when you weren’t looking. Here’s what you missed: 1) J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi show nicely balancing ongoing mysteries with satisfying conclusions. 2) Great leads (Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson, and John Noble) settling into their roles. 3) A dude turning into a spiky monster in an airplane bathroom. — Submitted by Elizabeth
