Ratings: Fewer folks tune in to see 'American Idol' open the phone lines

Posted on

The first voting night of American Idol‘s eighth season was watched by 25.1 million viewers — nearly 4 million fewer than what tuned in for season 7’s opening of the phone lines. (Could it be that fans are less psyched to begin voting on a Top 36 than on a more finely-tuned Top 24?) CBS’ The Mentalist, meanwhile, was down 7 percent compared to last week, when the show didn’t face the second hour of Idol. Still, it remained strong with 18.3 million viewers.  And NBC’s The Biggest Loser: Couples dropped 4 percent.
