Ratings: Touchdown! Football wins the week

Last week, just one thing totally ruled the airwaves: football. Between the Tostitos FIesta Bowl (No. 5, 17.1 million viewers) on Monday; the FedEx BCS National Championship game (No. 1, 26.8 million viewers) on Thursday; and an NFC playoff game (No. 2, 23.8 million) on Saturday, Fox’s pigskin trifecta made a ratings touchdown in the weekly ratings.

Besides the big sporting events, though, it was about celebrities: The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards clocked in at No. 7 with 14.9 million viewers, the worst tally for a full Globes soiree since 1995, when the show drew a mere 3.6 million viewers on TBS (it moved to NBC in 1996). Last year, the event was effectively canceled because of the writers’ strike and the telecast was boiled down to a press conference; that drew 6 million. The other celebrity on the ratings radar? Patrick Swayze. Barbara Walters grilled him on one of her signature specials, which rolled in at No. 11 with 12.6 million viewers.

The rest of the shows filling out the week’s Top 20 were rather typical — CBS procedurals, 60 Minutes, ABC’s Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy, and so on. One new entry, though: NBC’s The Biggest Loser premiered at No. 14 with 11.9 million viewers — a very healthy number for an aging reality show in its seventh season. But don’t be totally fooled — most programs will be back with new episodes next week, so that could bring Loser‘s draw down quite a bit.

The full Top 20 is after the jump.
