The Must List: Week of Jan. 11, 2009

Posted on

Battlestar Galactica
Carole Segal/SCI FI

MOVIES
1. THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON
Director David Fincher admirably minimizes the schmaltz, and somewhere in the middle, Brad Pitt looks just like Brad Pitt, which never hurts.

TV
2. DAMAGES on FX
William Hurt, Marcia Gay Harden, and Timothy Olyphant join an already killer cast for season 2. Not that Glenn really needs help.

BOOKS
3. THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX, by Kate DiCamillo and Timothy Basil Ering
The movie, alas, is kind of lame. Pick up a copy of DiCamillo’s mouse Tale instead and see why her classic kids’ book deserved better.

DVD
4. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, SEASON 4.0 on DVD
The strike-delayed final episodes start Jan. 16. So make sure you’re caught up on this brilliant series — and brace yourself for however the frak it’s gonna end.

MOVIES
5. BILL NIGHY in ‘Valkyrie'”
He doesn’t get to wear the fun eye patch, but his conflicted General Olbricht manages to stand out anyway.

BOOKS
6. REVOLUTIONARY ROAD, by Richard Yates
If you thought Kate and Leo were devastating, get your hands on the source material. An overlooked classic.

MUSIC
7. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE soundtrack
AR Rahman’s exhilarating music brings the film rushing back. Honestly, though, we’d drop $12.50 just to hear ”O…Saya,” his M.I.A. collaboration from the opening chase scene.

MUSIC
8. ”THE FEAR” video, Lily Allen
Our favorite raven-haired, foulmouthed Brit returns to throw pastel dance numbers in the face of depression. If anything, her deadpan has just gotten cooler.

TV
9. Elvis Costello‘s SPECTACLE
The charismatic rocker and his famous pals make beautiful music together on his Sundance chat show.

READER’S CHOICE*: MOVIES
10. TRAILER FOR 9
This creepy, absorbing spot for the Tim Burton/Shane Acker animated thriller reminds us a bit of WALL-E. If WALL-E were really, really scary. —Submitted by Trev

READER’S CHOICE*: DVD
11. DR. HORRIBLE’S SING-ALONG BLOG on DVD
Pure awesome win. The Evil Applicants are most excellent. Tur-Mohel wins the award for Best New Villain. —Berto

READER’S CHOICE*: BOOKS
12. THE WATCHMEN graphic novel
In the midst of all this controversy surrounding the movie, I’m discovering the graphic novel for the first time and absolutely loving it. It’s not just great as a comic; it’s one of the finest novels I’ve ever read. —Clayton

READER’S CHOICE*: MOVIES
13. Trailer for MY BLOODY VALENTINE
Have you SEEN the My Bloody Valentine trailer? I can’t even remember the last time I saw a horror/slasher type movie in a theater. But I am so there come January 16. —Charstin

READER’S CHOICE*: MUSIC
14. Fall Out Boy’s FOLIE À DEUX
Say what you will. The Boy is back in town and rocking harder than I can remember them. —Seth F.

READER’S CHOICE*: MOVIES
15. FROST/NIXON
Hate that it’s not getting the attention it deserves. It needs buzz to survive in the Academy Awards race, and it should get it. It’s a poignant historical drama that shouldn’t be missed for all movie buffs. —Dr. Zaius
