Rebecca Romijn’s twins and John Travolta’s family tragedy made news the week of January 5, 2008

BIRTHS
Rebecca Romijn (Ugly Betty), 36, and husband Jerry O’Connell (Kangaroo Jack), 34, are parents of twin girls: Dolly Rebecca Rose and Charlie Tamara Tulip were born on Dec. 28 in L.A…. Jennifer Garner (Juno), 36, gave birth to a baby girl on Jan. 6 in L.A. That means husband Ben Affleck (Hollywoodland), 36, is still the only man in the fam, which includes daughter Violet, 3.

AWARDS
The Producers Guild of America announced nominations for its top feature award on Jan. 5 in L.A.: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Dark Knight, Frost/Nixon, Milk, and Slumdog Millionaire. Their picks further sharpened the 2009 Oscar race: The last five years, the PGA matched at least four of the five eventual Best Picture nominees. The honor will be doled out Jan. 24.

SPLITS
On Jan. 5 in L.A., Medium star Patricia Arquette, 40, filed for divorce from actor husband Thomas Jane, 39, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple has a 5-year-old daughter…. Gossip Girl‘s Kelly Rutherford, 40, split from entrepreneur husband Daniel Giersch Dec. 30 in L.A., citing irreconcilable differences. Rutherford is currently four months pregnant with the couple’s second child.

ARRESTS
Playwright-actor Sam Shepard, 65, was arrested Jan. 3 on drunk-driving and speeding charges in Normal, Ill. He posted $300 bail and was released a few hours later…. Actor Matt Dillon, 44, was booked by cops for speeding in Newbury, Vt., on Dec. 30. Dillon was allegedly driving 106 miles per hour in a 65- miles-per-hour zone. The actor was given a citation, and is due to appear in court Jan. 21.

COURTS
On Jan. 2 in Santa Barbara, DUI charges against Heather Locklear, 47, were dismissed after the actress pleaded no contest to reckless driving while medicated (the charges stem from her September arrest). Locklear was sentenced to three years’ informal probation, and she must pay a $700 fine and complete a state-mandated drug-education course.

DEATHS
Producer and former studio chief Ned Tanen, 77, died of natural causes Jan. 5 in Santa Monica. Tanen ran Universal from 1976 to 1982 (On Golden Pond) and Paramount from 1984 to 1988 (Top Gun). He also produced Brat Pack films like The Breakfast Club…. Actor Pat Hingle, 84, who appeared as Police Commissioner Gordon in several Batman movies, passed away Jan. 3 in Carolina Beach, N.C., of blood cancer. — With additional reporting by Stewart Allen

TRAGEDY IN THE TRAVOLTA FAMILY
Jett Travolta, the 16-year-old son of actor John Travolta and actress Kelly Preston, passed away Jan. 2 in the Bahamas after suffering an apparent seizure. Jett was said to have suffered from Kawasaki syndrome, a rare inflammatory disease. The family wrote on Travolta’s website: ”Jett was the most wonderful son that two parents could ever ask for…. We are heartbroken that our time with him was so brief.” — KW
