Pop-up books in stores now — A look at some interactive 3D books, including ”Moon Landing” and ”20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”

Posted on

A whole new crop of interactive 3-D books is springing up in bookstores this fall. From old ladies and spiders to spaceships and battleships, here’s what some of our favorites have to offer.

Brava, Strega, Nona!
By Tomie dePaola
Pop-up pros Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart help bring dePaola’s classic children’s series to life in Brava, which even comes complete with a mini pop-up bio of the famed Italian grandma. Bellissimo!

By Lucio and Meera Santoro
Arachnophobes and selachophobes beware: The Santoros’ pop-up is stunning, but it spotlights spiders and sharks — and boasts enough terrifying facts to shake the bravest of souls (great white sharks can detect one droplet of blood in 25 gallons of water).

Moon Landing
By Richard Platt and David Hawcock
Platt and Hawcock commemorate the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11‘s moon landing with a book that features not only the rockets but the astronauts’ gear and the landing sites in 3-D.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
By Sam Ita
Helping children and adults with short attention spans appreciate the classics, Ita follows up his 2007 pop-up, Moby-Dick, with a spectacular comic adaptation of Jules Verne’s 1870 novel.

By Robert Crowther
Get on board! Crowther’s informational pop-up provides cool facts — and impressive 3-D images — on everything from early Egyptian boats to battleships to ocean liners.
